Rock talks about his work with Marvin Gaye and Paul Hardcastle...
"I worked for five months with Paul on the Hardcastle VI CD "and the “Rainforest/What’s Going On” single. I am personally a big Hardcastle fan and my playing goes well with his because of my familiarity with his work. There is some kind of magic that goes on when we collaborate. Back in the day, I was working at Motown in 1983 as a session player and Paul had just signed with Chrysalis. We never had an opportunity to meet. In 1983, I had just been asked to play with Marvin Gaye, but sadly tragedy struck on April 1 with his passing not long after I arrived to L.A. from Hawaii. My proposed Marvin Gaye gig never happened. I attended Marvin’s funeral and visited his home many times with his family and the Gordy’s bringing back many memories of both happy and sad times. I stayed on at Motown for ten years and worked on many records later including playing on Marvin Gaye’s son’s version of “What’s Going On”. In the 90′s, I joined Bobby Womack’s band and soon discovered the group was Marvin’s old band.
After all these years, on the anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s death, April 1 when Paul Hardcastle sent me the Marvin Gaye track with me playing I was flabbergasted. Rock concluded by saying….”I really believe this was beyond coincidence."
Rock also states: "I am blessed to be a part of Paul's music and feel it is his best to date. I don’t consider myself better than anyone but I would be happy with the recognition for all the years I devoted to the craft and what better platform to be able to do it on than Paul Hardcastle’s production mastery.”
