ROCK HENDRICKS
About

Music was woven into Rock Hendricks' very being from the moment he was born. Born with a rare congenital eye disease that left him virtually blind, Rock's world was one of sound and sensation. From an early age, his hearing became his compass, guiding him toward the rich, soulful tone of the saxophone. When asked why he chose the sax, Rock simply replied, “I didn’t have a choice.” It was a bond he felt deep in his soul—a calling he was destined to answer.
Rock’s formative years were steeped in the powerful melodies of symphonic music, gospel hymns, and the electrifying rhythms of legends like Little Richard and Fats Domino. These influences ignited a lifelong passion that would fuel his dedication to his craft. At the age of seven, after several eye surgeries, Rock experienced a miracle — he was given the gift of partial sight. That day remains one of the most pivotal moments of his life. But the experience that followed, the day he first laid eyes on a saxophone, came a close second. It was, in his words, "love at first sight." Two years later, his father gave him his first saxophone, and it was clear that a musical prodigy was born.
By age 15, Rock was already performing with the soul groups of Oakland, California. This exposure to the vibrant soul scene became the cornerstone of his distinctive sound — a blend of technical mastery and raw emotion that would define his musical career. It was here that Rock honed the deep, soulful tone that remains a hallmark of his playing.

Throughout his illustrious career, Rock has shared stages and studios with an impressive array of legendary artists. His saxophone has graced the recordings and performances of icons such as Motown Records, Michael Jackson, Mick Fleetwood, Ace Band, John Lee Hooker, Leon Russell, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, George Michael, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood, The Funkadelics, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Bobby Womack, Rick James, Aretha Franklin, Patty LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Walter Becker and Donald Fagan (Steely Dan), Michael Bublé, Jeff Lorber and countless others. His versatility and unmistakable sound have earned him a reputation as one of the most sought-after saxophonists in the world. Since 2009, Rock has collaborated extensively with acclaimed composer and producer Paul Hardcastle, achieving several #1 hits on Billboard as well as US and International Smooth Jazz charts. In 2016, Rock released his debut solo album, Can't Let Go, under Trippin 'n Rhythm Records. The album showcases his unique style and musical prowess. His music has also reached audiences in the digital realm, with contributions to the Electronic Arts video game The Sims, a title that has sold over 150 million copies worldwide.

For more than 40 years, Rock has called Hawaii home, collaborating with renowned artists such as Cecilio & Kapono, The Cazimero Brothers, and Willie K. Based in Maui, he continues to showcase his exceptional skill and signature fusion of smooth jazz, rock, and soul, leaving a lasting impression on every audience, whether in the studio or on stage.

Watch for Rock’s next album coming soon on San Francisco Records.

In loving memory of the legendary Alto Reed — saxophonist with Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band. Your soul and sound will live on forever. Rest in peace, brother.
